Applicant Qualifications

You can submit the application yourself or authorize a third party to do so.

1. The Visa Centre accepts visa applications from Indian citizens or citizens of other countries staying in India with appropriate legal status. However, we cannot accept the application if you are not physically in India when your application is being submitted. If you are not currently in the country in which this centre is located, please apply from where you normally reside, or apply after you return to the country. Application acceptance is ONLY available to people lawfully residing in the country in which this Visa Centre is located.

2. The Chinese Embassy and Consulates-General have their own jurisdictional areas formally known as consular districts. Only those who reside within a particular consular district of the Chinese Embassy in India can apply through this Centre. Please click here to check the service areas of this Centre.

When to apply

You should make your application well in advance of the planned travel date. You are advised to apply ONE month in advance but no earlier than THREE months.

Visa processing time varies with location. Please click here for the processing time of this Visa Centre. However, you should be aware that actual processing time may be longer than that posted on the web site in certain circumstances. If there is such a delay, you will be notified by the Visa Centre staff.

What type of VISA should I apply?

X1 Visa: Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.

X2 Visa: Issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days.

How to prepare the application materials

1. Basic Documents

  • Passport

    Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity, at least 2 blank visa pages, a photocopy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate. For multiple-visa application, the remaining validity of the passport must cover the validity of visa and the duration of stay. For example, if applying for a visa with 6 months validity, multiple entries, and 30 days of each stay, the remaining validity of the passport should be at least 7 months.

  • Visa Application Form and Photo

    One completed Visa Application Form with a recently-taken colour passport photo (bare-head, full face) against a light background (size: 48mm x 33mm) attached.

    There are two ways to prepare your application form. You may complete an Online Application Form (where a Visa Centre provides such service), print it out and sign it; or, you can download the application form from our website and fill it out manually and sign it.

    Please remember to bring the completed form to the Visa Centre to submit your application.

  • Proof of legal stay or residence status (applicable to those who are not of Indian citizenship).

    The applicant from a third country should provide valid Indian visa or valid Residence Permit in India and its copy. In case the applicant from a third country staying in India with a short-term visa, a note verbale (with details as follows: applicant's name, passport number, occupation, purpose to go to China, duration of stay in China) by the Embassy or Consulate-General of his / her own country is required.

  • Photocopy of previous Chinese passports or previous Chinese visas (applicable to those who were Chinese citizens and have obtained foreign citizenship).

    If you are applying for a Chinese visa for the first time, you should provide your previous Chinese passport and a photocopy of its data page.

    If you have obtained Chinese visas before and want to apply for a Chinese visa with a renewed foreign passport that does not contain any Chinese visa, you should present the photocopy of the previous passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate, as well as the previous Chinese visa page. (If your name on the current passport differs from that on the previous one, you must provide an official document of name change.)

  • The Visa Application Form shall be signed by the applicant. In case the applicant is a person without or with limited capacity for civil conduct, the application form should be signed by his / her guardian on his / her behalf. If the form is filled out by entrusted travel / visa agent, both the applicant's signature and the stamp of the agent are required.

  • Child of Chinese descent born either in China or in India applies for a Chinese visa for the first time, the Birth Certificate with his / her parents' names on, the original certificate for renunciation of Chinese nationality and its copy, and the statement written by his / her parents or guardian are required.

    Child of Chinese descent born in a third country should make his / her Chinese visa application in his / her resident country if the Birth Certificate and the certificate for renunciation of Chinese nationality cannot be submitted.

  • The applicant must be in India while making the application for a Chinese Visa. Otherwise, the applicant should take full consequences.

  • Different types of visas will be issued according to applicants' identities, purposes and activities. The applicant should not engage in activities not conform to the type of visa he / she is holding in China. Application should be made in line with the purpose of activity in China. Otherwise, the applicant should take full consequences.

  • Fraud documents or false information provided by the applicant will result in rejection of individual application and disqualification of travel / visa agency to apply for Chinese visa.

  • Ordinary passport holders are required to submit applications to the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) where CVASC is available.

  • The Chinese Embassy and Consulates-General do not accept applications by post.

  • The normal processing of Chinese visa takes about one to two weeks. The applicant should plan ahead. Any applicant who attempts to interfere with the office of Chinese Embassy or Consulates by using "my air ticket has been confirmed" as a pretext may likely result in the rejection of his / her visa application.

  • In case of urgent service is provided at the approval of the Chinese Embassy or the Consulates-General, the applicant should pay extra fee accordingly.

  • Applicants residing within consular district of Chinese Consulate-General in Kolkata and Mumbai are required to submit their applications to the respective Chinese Consulate-General in Kolkata and Mumbai. The consular district of the Chinese Consulate-General in Kolkata covers Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. The consular district of the Chinese Consulate-General in Mumbai covers Maharashtra and Karnataka.

2. Supporting Documents

  • Original and photocopy of the Admission Letter issued by a school or other entities in China.

  • Original and photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202).

  • Personal written statement (covering letter with details as follows: place to visit, name, address and contact number of the school or entity of admission).

  • Other documents required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General.

    We kindly remind you that:

    Holders of X1 Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of their entry, apply to the exit/entry administrations of public security organs under local people's governments at or above the county level in the proposed places of residence for foreigners' residence permits.

3. Special Reminder

  • The invitation letter may be in the form of fax, photocopy or computer printout, but the consular officer may require the applicant to submit the original of the invitation letter.

  • If necessary, the consular officer may require the applicant to provide other documents or supplementary materials, or require an interview with the applicant.

  • The consular officer will decide on whether or not to issue the visa and on its validity, duration of stay and number of entries in light of specific conditions of the applicant.

After arrival at the center

On the day of your visit to the Centre, please be punctual. Upon arrival, you will:

  • Obtain a queue number for submitting your application; please wait for your number to be called

  • Submit your application at the counter designated for handling the particular queue number

  • Receive a pick-up form, which is a receipt showing the information of your application and expected date for collection

Please CHECK all the particulars on the pick-up form; should you have any questions about the information printed on it, please contact the staff immediately. Always carefully retain the pick-up form as it must be shown when collecting your passport.

Track the status of application

The Chinese Visa Application Service Centre provides a 24-hour online facility to track the status of your application. You can click here to enter track your application status page and bookmark it. Or you can easily find the tracking page from Quick Access on the homepage of the Visa Centre's web site.

When to collect your passport?

The date for collecting your passport is shown on the pick-up form issued to you on the day of application. Should there be any delay in processing and the passport cannot be returned to you as scheduled, the Visa Centre staff will notify you ASAP. Otherwise, please go to the Centre to make payment and collect your passport with the pick-up form in a timely manner. Please note that all the passports overdue for collection will be returned to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General after the expiry of a visa, or 365 days of the decision by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General to issue or refuse the visa application.

When you arrive at the Visa Centre, please:

  • Obtain a queue number for making payment and collecting your passport and wait for your number to be called.

  • Present the pick-up form to the staff at the counter designated for handling the queue number. Make payment and get your payment receipt before collecting your passport. Please note the cashier counter and the collection counter are normally next to each other. There is no need to obtain a new queue number to collect your passport after making payment.

  • Collect your passport by presenting the pick-up form and payment receipt.

  • Please carefully CHECK all the particulars, such as your name, birth date, passport number, validity, number of entries, duration of stay on your visa, and let the staff know immediately if there is any problem. Failure to do so may lead to serious consequences. For details, please refer to Terms and Conditions.

Please note that visa fees and service fees may vary across different visa categories and service options.


1. Visa Fees are collected on behalf of the Chinese Embassy.

2. Application Service Fees are charged by the Centre and they are non-refundable.

3. The total amount of the fees to be paid by an applicant = visa fees + application service fees in cash.

4. For Express Service (next working day collection), you will have to submit your application before 11AM, and pick up your visa after 3PM the next working day afternoon.

Due to the fact that China and some countries have bilateral arrangements covering visa fees, the amount generated by the system prevails in case of any difference between the amount of visa fee generated by the system and that listed in the Schedule of Fees.
